    Big Yam Dreaming

The power of this work is evident not only in its immense scale but in its celebration of the Yam Dreaming , for which Emily was custodian. The yam is evident in different ways in all of Emily’s works.  The stark lineal network of white lines represents the root growth of the finger yam, Anooralya across the cracked earth.
This epic work was completed in two days with Emily sitting cross-legged on the canvas “knitting” her way to the edges. As with many of Emily’s works the use of a black undercoat referred to body painting on black skin.
